Sungke Lua, an iconic name when it comes to the month of Ramadhan as people with different faith, race and background gather towards at a designated space to share a festive moment in breaking fast with one another.
It all began four years ago back in 2015 when a team of local video production company, ORGKAMPONG decided to work together with The Collective to organise a breaking of fast (Sungke Lua) session among mutual friends at Padang Merdeka but instead it blossomed into a huge surprise as the turnout for the gathering was at a staggering amount close to at least 1000 attendees. Undoubtedly, it became an annual gathering organised by ORGKAMPONG with different organisations each year during the month of fasting ever since then.
The concept of Sungke Lua as described by co-founder of ORGKAMPONG, Afick Wazai, Radio DJ Era Fm – is to create a gathering space for people to come around to break their fast together, to unite the multi-racial community, and to attract the curious cats of the public who are eager to experience the feeling of breaking fast in conjunction with the month of Ramadhan.
Afick added that by organising the event with local companies and organisations, it will bring a greater extend of exposure through the collaboration and the name of partnered companies and organisations will rose up.
For this year, ORGKAMPONG organised Sungkey Lua on the June 18 with MEETUPKCH, a local youth festival company with support from MaGIC(Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Centre), Youth Sarawak, Scene & Co and official venue at Borneo 744, an entrepreneur & arts hub district.
The structure and theme for this year’s Sungkey Lua is quite different from it’s predecessors hence the change of venue from the usual Padang Merdeka setting. As they say, by working with different minds, you get different ideas in executing a new idea.
With food preparation from locally known food trucks such as Kuching Food Cartel and Swee Kang Ice Kacang, performances by Soundaholic and Geng Busker Kuching, event coverage by local radio station, CATS FM, the event was also livened up with talksets in regards of business opportunities, platform, and advises for youth by MaGIC.
Afick also hopes that one day the message of unity within Sungkey Lua will be spreaded around the region or to any multi-racial countries in hopes of a better life in harmony and to also strengthen the relationship among Kuchingites for the coming raya at that time.
