KUCHING: Sunway received a prestigious award in recognition of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) from the Department of Social Welfare Malaysia at its 75th anniversary celebration.
Sunway Group founder and chairman, Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah received the award on behalf of the conglomerate from Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who officiated at the awards ceremony held at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre in Putrajaya last Sunday.
“We are humbled by the recognition and this award goes to our team at Sunway who is working tirelessly, not only to innovate for long-term solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges every day but also dedicated to reaching out to those who need it the most at every step of the way, so that no one will be left behind on the path to progress. The goals of the UN-SDGs are not the work of governments alone – it is everyone’s responsibility. We are all in this together,” said Cheah.
He added that Sunway Group was committed to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs) and carried out CSR aligned to the UN-SDGs through its #SunwayforGood initiatives.
“These initiatives are focused on delivering education, healthcare, and community enrichment to those who need it the most, especially individuals in the B40 communities,” he said.
To date, #SunwayforGood initiatives has impacted 404,901 Malaysians across the country and targets to improve one million lives by 2030.
In 2020, the group had sponsored RM1 million to set-up the #SunwayforGood Anjung Kasih Yayasan Kebajikan Negara for the Hospital Seberang Jaya in Penang.
The project provides temporary accommodation for family members from underserved communities who are accompanying patients receiving treatments at government hospitals.
Since the start of the pandemic last year, Cheah said Sunway Group has committed more than RM50 million, which included more than RM12 million, to support government healthcare institutions and professionals.
In conjunction with the Hari Raya festive season, Sunway will be embarking on its Hari Raya CSR campaign which will reach out to a total of 14,266 beneficiaries nationwide.
Sunway has also pledged to build and refurbish at least 50 libraries through the Sunway READ programme, pack a total of one million meals for undernourished communities, set up 50 urban farms for 50 orphanages, and provide basic health screening in partnership with the National Kidney Foundation for 50 Orang Asal communities.
