KUCHING: Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City (SMC), the largest private quaternary hospital in Malaysia, successfully launched its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Radiotherapy program and hosted a Public Health Forum – Fearless Against Cancer: Innovation in Cancer Treatment at the Imperial Hotel Kuching recently.

The event was inaugurated by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian and Dr Seow Vei Ken, Chief Executive Officer of SMC. They both expressed their support and commitment to advancing cancer care and treatment. They launched the CSR program, underscoring SMC’s dedication to providing accessible advanced cancer treatments to all communities, including those in Sarawak.

“The event was also a collaboration with Junior Chamber International Kuching (JCI Kuching), Sunway Traditional and Complementary Medicine (TCM) Kuching, and the Society for Cancer Advocacy and Awareness Kuching (SCAN),” according to a statement released today (July 1).

“According to the Malaysian National Cancer Registry 2012–2016, Sarawak has the 5th highest cancer incidence rate among the states.

“The state reportedly records 2,300 new cancer cases annually. The CSR Radiotherapy Programme demonstrates SMC’s dedication to improving patient outcomes and quality of life through advanced cancer treatment and comprehensive care,” the statement added.

Dr. Seow emphasized the hospital’s commitment to improving patient outcomes and quality of life through advanced cancer treatment and comprehensive care with the CSR radiotherapy program.

“The launch of the CSR Radiotherapy Programme is a testament to our unwavering commitment to cancer advocacy and awareness.

“By offering affordable radiotherapy services and advanced treatment options, we aim to alleviate the financial burden on cancer patients in Sarawak, ensuring they can focus on their recovery with dignity and peace of mind.

“Together, through collaborative efforts and community support, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by cancer in the Sarawak community and beyond,” he said.

The event also featured enlightening and educational talks by SMC medical experts, including Consultant Neurosurgeon, Spine and Interventional Pain Specialist, Dr. Toh Charng Jeng, and Clinical Oncologist Dr. Ivan Shew Yee Sian.

In Malaysia, with 1 in 9 Malaysian men and 1 in 10 Malaysian women at risk of developing cancer in their lifetime, esteemed consultants from a multidisciplinary team provided invaluable insights into cutting-edge cancer treatments.

Consultant Neurosurgeon, Spine and Interventional Pain Specialist, Dr. Toh delivered a compelling talk on Minimal Invasive Neurosurgery.

“By utilizing advanced technologies and minimally invasive surgical techniques, we can precisely target affected areas with minimal disruption to surrounding tissues.

“This approach not only improves patient outcomes but also enhances their overall quality of life by allowing for quicker returns to daily activities and reducing the risks associated with traditional open surgeries,” said Dr Toh, highlighting the advantages of minimally invasive surgery.

This was followed by a talk by Clinical Oncologist Dr. Ivan Shew, who captivated the audience with his presentation on Innovation in Cancer Treatment.

In his talk, he stated that innovative cancer treatments are revolutionising oncology by providing more effective and personalized care.

SMC is the multi-award-winning largest private quaternary hospital in Malaysia, with 28 centres of excellence and a diverse multidisciplinary team that provides personalized treatment with a holistic care approach.

The hospital was recently ranked in the top 75 hospitals by Newsweek in the Best Specialised Hospitals Asia Pacific 2024 rankings for the second consecutive year.
