SIBU: The stage is set for a seamless transition of leadership at the forthcoming triennial general meeting (TGM) of the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP)’s Bawang Assan Branch members on Nov 9.

Its branch chairman, Senator Robert Lau Hui Yew, expressed his immense pride in the discipline and good cooperation displayed by the branch’s multi-racial membership that have consistently placed the well-being of the community and the strength of the party above personal ambitions.

“I am not seeking re-election as the branch chairman because I believe the time is right to pass the baton to a younger leader.

“The new generation of leaders, with their energy and innovative ideas are well-positioned to take our mission forward, serving the people of Bawang Assan with renewed vigour,” Lau stated in a press statement yesterday (Nov 2).

Lau’s announcement came with a deep sense of fulfillment as under his leadership, the branch has thrived on the principles of inclusivity, teamwork, and a strong commitment to addressing the concerns of all constituents, regardless of race or background.

“The principles showed by the members have been instrumental in fostering a harmonious and effective working environment within the branch, ensuring the party’s goal align with the needs of the people,” he said.

For the record, Lau stepped up as a leader for the Bawang Assan Branch at a time when it was in ashes following the departure of several leaders from the party and the branch, and he nursed it back to health after over more than a decade long leadership.

“We have built something remarkable here. Our members come from all walks of life and represent the diverse tapestry of our community, yet we have always managed to find common ground in our shared purpose of service.

“As I prepare to hand over leadership, I reflect on the exciting future ahead. Leadership is not about holding onto power but about empowering others to continue the work.

“I am confident that the younger generation will lead with integrity, compassion, and a genuine desire to uplift our community.

“My decision to step aside at this juncture is driven by a belief in the importance of renewal and the infusion of new ideas, while still cherishing the foundational values that have guided the branch thus far,” he stated.

As preparations for the TGM reach its final stages, expectations are high for a well-organised and constructive meeting.

Members have also expressed their gratitude to Lau for his years of selfless services and are eager to support a new leadership team that will carry forward the branch’s mission with the same dedication and passion.

At the closing of nominations for branch positions in the three main sections – Branch, Women and Youth – the total number of candidates fell within the number of available positions.

According to Lau, SUPP practices a two-tier election system for office bearers. Under the first round of election, members elect candidates as office bearers. The second round of elections sees the office bearers voting into various positions the elected office bearers.
