KUCHING: All Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) branches in the state are in the process of drawing up their own people-centric programmes in order to reach out to as many grassroots as possible.
This was revealed by SUPP vice president Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing when contacted by New Sarawak Tribune recently.
“It was decided that every branch must carry out activities in conjunction with the party’s 60th anniversary celebration this year.
“The nature of events will be up to the individual branches but they should preferably be people-centric programmes that can reach out to as many grassroots as possible,” he said.
SUPP was founded in 1959 and June 4 every year marks its anniversary. The party is the oldest multiracial political party to fight for the people and the interest of Sarawak.
SUPP secretary general Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said the party had been fighting for the people and Sarawak since its establishment.
He hoped the new generation of members would continue with the aims and objectives of the party.
In conjunction with the party’s anniversary celebration, Ting said there would be activities for the party members and for the general public.
“For the party members, we will hold activities that will be participated by all members including senior or former members of SUPP.
“This is not only to foster ties among the party members but also to appreciate each member’s contribution to the party,” he said.
Ting explained that the activities involving the general public would also be held to engage and appreciate the community’s endless support to the party.
He pointed out one of these activities would be the annual “722 Run for Sarawak” marathon.
“This will be the third year of the run. Originally, we targeted to have 1,000 participants this year. But within a day, we were able to receive a big number of early online registrations!
“This goes to show that the public positively welcomes activities we organise and also those held to celebrate Independence Day of Sarawak,” he said.
On the “722 Run for Sarawak”, Ting said the registration fee would only be RM20 per person.
“The money collected will be returned back to the community; we will donate it to charitable organisations,” he said.
