SIBU: The practice of Chinese traditions and culture with celebrations needs to be shared with other races in the nation.
Stating this, the chairman of Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Sibu Liaison Committee Cr Robert Lau Hui Yew said this was because Malaysia is a multi-racial country.
“This is very important because we have to embrace other communities, especially in Sibu” he said in his address at the mid-autumn festival celebration cum veneration of the elderly organised by SUPP at a local restaurant recently.
Lau, who is also the chairman of SUPP Bawang Assan branch, said the mid-autumn festival for the Chinese was the second most important festival after Chinese New Year.
Chinese history, he said, has the longest civilisation of mankind dating back to some 5,000 years ago.
“Chinese culture is all about history and traditions and is very different from other cultures. It does not have a religion,” he said.
Touching on the coming 14th general election, Lau urged the party members to do their work.
He said they should urge their family members, relatives and friends to come out to vote.
“The Barisan Nasional (BN) must wrest back the Sibu parliamentary seat otherwise Sibu will face a bleak future,” he said.
According to Lau, after 58 years of existence, SUPP continues serving the Sibu people. Among those present were SUPP Dudong branch chairman Datuk Dr Soon Koh Teck, SUPP Pelawan branch chairman Clarence Ting, SUPP Nangka branch chairman Benson Chua, political secretary to the Chief Minister Michael Tiang and comrades from other BN component parties.
