KUCHING: The Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) will remain resilient and continue to thrive despite setbacks or ‘thunderstorms,’ said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

Dr Sim, who is also the party president, noted that throughout its 65-year history, the SUPP Kuching Branch has aimed to assist all Sarawakians for the overall benefit of the state.

He highlighted that the party has remained resilient amid the changing political landscape.

“We were already there even before the formation of Malaysia. And many other parties have ceased to exist over the years, yet SUPP remains.

“Why? Despite the ups and downs of politics, we have endured because of our members, our leaders, their unity, their wisdom, which allowed us to survive until today,” he said.

He said this during SUPP Kuching branch’s 65th anniversary celebration at its branch office in Jalan Sungai Padungan here last night (June 29).

Earlier, Dr Sim revealed that the anniversary celebration also saw the induction of over 200 young members into the Kuching branch.

He also called on the Kuching branch to keep pace with the times, especially for the newly inducted young members.

“Regardless of the circumstances, the Kuching branch must move forward. We hope these 200 young members will join us in continuing to reform Kuching,” he added.

Apart from that, he warned against individuals who do not contribute positively to the state’s development.

“Those who are not nation-builders are not needed. We do not need these petty individuals or small factions, because Sarawak is moving towards a greater direction. The future Sarawak will be wealthy and powerful, benefiting all Sarawakians,” he said.

Dr Sim also drew attention to Sarawak’s promising future due to its rich resources, including green energy and the procurement of its port and airport.

He cited that Sarawak’s revenue increased from over RM5 billion in 2018 to RM13 billion in 2023 due to the efforts of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government.

“And in the first quarter of this year, we have already recorded RM4.7 billion in revenue. Sarawak will continue to prosper, and so will its people.

“Now we are focused on the nation-building of Sarawak, which requires talent and unity to realise the net zero agenda and foster a new economy,” he said.
