KUCHING: President of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said SUPP supports and welcomes the Prime Minister’s decision that the Government will not table the RUU 355 in the Parliament.
“Our party had steadfastly stood by its principle to oppose the Bill right from the beginning and would absolutely against any attempt by any quarter to destroy or jeopardise the existing peace and stability of our nation. Further, SUPP is also resolutely determined to safeguard the Federal Constitution on the principle of fair treatment to all races. The Barisan Nasional being the Government of the day owes a duty and a responsibility to all Malaysians, to ensure that all races shall be living in peace and harmony and be free from any constitutional crisis or mutual distrust,” he said.
He added that the unanimous decision by the BN not to table the RUU 355 by the Government yesterday was based on general consensus within BN which was in line with the BN’s long established and closely guarded traditions, principles and practices.
“It shall be reminded that a united Sarawak BN had played a vital role in the above decision making. With a stronger and united Sarawak BN, we are able to oppose any issue prejudicial to the interests of Sarawak and the nation within the BN,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sibu Bawang Assan SUPP Chairman, Robert Lau said the decision is a good one as BN still practises the policy of consensus. Malaysia is a multiracial multi-religious moderate society. The people will have to speak up and make a stand to defend this position, said Robert Lau
“I am happy to note that SUPP has been standing by this principle and oppose the Bill right from the start. This is even more important for Sarawak. Sarawak does not have a state religion. This was the agreed principle when Malaysia was formed. Religion should be kept out of politics.
“In any society human welfare is the priority and that has to be put in order first. Religious principles can act as guiding principles but not as the law or authority. This is because religion is based on faith. And faith is very personal and subjective. Whereas human society needs objectivity and certainty to operate,” Dr Sim added.
