MIRI : The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) made between Sarawak United People’s Party and United People’s Party prior to the 14th General Election was, in fact, an affirmation of commitment by both parties to the Sarawak Chinese community, which had been appealing for more political unity among the Chinese state representatives in Sarawak government, said SUPP Secretary-General, and Piasau State Assemblyman, Datuk Sebastian Ting.
“We were taken aback and were indeed very surprised to learn that UPP ceased to honour what they had pledged in the MoU. There was simply no courtesy at all from UPP leaders to inform us earlier.”
The main objective of the MoU was to allow both UPP and SUPP to work together, with an ultimate aim for UPP to eventually unite under SUPP’s banner to promote political unity and further strengthen Sarawak’s position in the Federation of Malaysia, Ting disclosed.
“SUPP learned something from this episode and will be very cautious in future,” he said.
