KUCHING: It is vital to understand that any crime committed must be dealt with according to the laws of the country and not via public wrath.
Responding to the KK Mart “Allah” socks controversy, Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) secretary Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said while it is only appropriate for punitiv-e action to be taken against the wrongdoers as it has already been done, all law-abiding citizens must accept that the principle of the supremacy of national laws is central to the functioning of modern legal systems, providing a foundation for governance, rights protection and dispute resolution.
“Hence, SUPP wishes to express its concern with the vigilante actions taken by some quarters against two citizens, which resulted in them receiving heavy fines and jail terms.
“It is also a matter of regret that the two men were not represented by lawyers in court.
“SUPP also notes with great consternation the petrol bomb attack at a KK Mart outlet in Perak a few days ago. This is likely a direct result of the boycott initiated by Umno Youth against the convenience store.
“In light of the unwarranted incidents and the negative publicity generated by the sock controversy, we would like to appeal to Umno Youth chief Mohd Akmal Saleh to think of the national interests and move on,” he said.
Ting felt that as Akmal have made his point, nothing positive will emerge out of any action wrapped in spite, anger and revenge.
“It is time to get over this unfortunate incident and move on to help in the nation’s progress and development.
“Most importantly, a time for Umno Youth to help unite the people as we need a united force to weather the difficult economic storms currently engulfing the nation,” he added.
“Umno is also an important partner in the Unity Government today.
“Given that recognition, SUPP expects the party to play its crucial role in ensuring political stability and progress in our beloved country,” he stated.
