KUCHING: There must be political stability to ensure Sarawak is socially and economically progressive and continue to remain in good hands.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing said therefore Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) must be returned to administer the state so that development can be further accelerated.

“The Pakatan Harapan (PH) government 22 months of administering this nation should be a lesson to all Malaysians. Do not change for the sake of changing,” he said in his New Year message on Monday (Dec 28).

He said the country was not spared of the Covid-19 pandemic, but the Sarawak government under the able leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg is doing its best to ensure that Sarawakian are not badly affected by the pandemic — socially and economically.

“The state government has done very well and thank God for that,” he said.

Commenting on the coming new year, Masing said the year 2021 will continue to see people practising the new norm.

“The year 2021 is the year of the new norm for no longer could we walk in the ‘park’ as usual. The requirements to be socially close to each other have been restricted.

“The needs to be in constant touch with their neighbours is not possible. The social instinct to gather in big numbers is prohibited. The way of lives which we have grown to know for centuries have been drastically changed,” he said.

Masing, who is also the Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president, said the pandemic affected everyone and even the strongest nations on earth were brought to their knees.

“Their economies shattered. Their lives are torn to shreds. This devastation to our lives is here to stay, at least, for a while. The new norm is here with us in 2021,” he said.

In the meantime, the deputy chief minister wished all Sarawakian the best for 2021. May God bless us all.
