KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) Bandar Kuching candidate Eric Tay Tze Kok has accepted his defeat in the 15th general election (GE15) with an open heart.
The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) youth leader failed to wrest back the seat and lost to Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen.
He congratulated Dr Yii on his victory and expressed his gratitude to voters for their unwavering support.
“There was so much I wanted to do for my people such as to solve the ever on-going flood issue in many areas as well as to bring in more development, give more opportunities to youth and many more.
“It was indeed a lifetime opportunity for me to be given a chance to stand as a candidate in Bandar Kuching. I will continue to learn and serve my people hereon,” he said when contacted by the New Sarawak Tribune.
Adding on, he assured the people that GPS and SUPP will continue to protect Sarawakians.
“As Tok Nan said, ‘Utamakan Sarawak. Jaga Sarawak baik-baik’,” he said, quoting former premier, the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem.
The highly coveted seat saw a three-cornered fight involving Eric, Dr Yii (DAP) and Voon Lee Shan from Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK).
Dr Yii defended Bandar Kuching which he won in the 2018 general election by defeating the then Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Kho Teck Wan from SUPP.
Eric polled 16,462 votes while Dr Yii garnered 45,353 votes and some 1,750 voters opted for Voon.
