MIRI: The ongoing hot and dry weather spell in Miri city has led to an increase in reptile encounters.

Reptiles, such as snakes and monitor lizards, are more active and visible during hot weather as they seek water and cooler places to regulate their body temperature.

From January to July 2024, a total of 27 snake and 12 monitor lizard cases have been reported, highlighting the pressing need for residents to remain vigilant.

Lutong Fire Station chief Henry Jugah detailed the distribution of snake cases, with Senadin accounting for the highest number at 11.

In addition to snake sightings, monitor lizards have also been frequently encountered.

The station recorded 12 cases of monitor lizards, with sightings in Senadin (three), Lutong, Permyjaya and The Village (two cases each), and Kuala Baram, Isle of Man and Tudan (one case each).

The increase in reptile sightings is being attributed to the hot and dry weather conditions, which drive these animals to seek cooler environments and water sources often found in residential areas.

Henry advised the local community to stay alert and maintain cleanliness in their homes and surroundings.

“Keeping the area clean and free of food remnants can discourage reptiles from entering residential premises,” he said.

As Miri continues to endure the dry spell, residents are urged to take preventive measures to ensure their safety and reduce the likelihood of reptile encounters.

The dry spell has prompted reptiles to seek refuge in cooler places.
