KUCHING: The unexpected victory of the Sarawak team in winning the first gold medal in the women’s shooting category for the petanque event has brought great pride.

Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, expressed pride in the achievement of Sarawak’s athletes for contributing a gold medal in this event.

“I would like to express my gratitude and congratulations to the Sarawak team because this is an event we never targetted.

“We are proud to have won the gold medal. This gives us guidance for future events,” she said.
She made this statement when met after presenting medals to the winners at the Petanque Event at the Santubong Petanque Arena here on Sunday.

Earlier, the coach of the Sarawak petanque team, Mohamad Ahir Binar, mentioned that the victory was unexpected as the team had targetted wins in other categories.

“Nevertheless, we are grateful for winning the gold medal in the women’s shooting category. This is a huge bonus for the Sarawak team.

“However, I hope our athletes will stay focused and strive their best to continue achieving success in this SUKMA,” he explained.

For the record, Sarawak won the first gold medal in the petanque event through the women’s shooting category when Sarawak athlete, Dayang Nurulnuhaa Fasihah Abang Misbahhuddin, 18, defeated Federal Territory athlete Nur Arissa Qasreena Ratinan with a score of 29-27 in the final round today.
