Suspect in Sibu baby dumping case charged with rape

SIBU: The suspect in the baby dumping case in Jalan Tong Sang on Oct 29, was brought before the Magistrates’ Court, Friday (Nov 8) on charges of rape.

The charges were read to him before Magistrate Romario Jonoi and no plea was recorded from the accused, aged 44.

According to the charges, he is accused of raping a girl, who is under 16 years old, in a rented room in Jalan Tong Sang between March and October 2024.

The accused is charged in accordance with Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which carries a prison sentence of not less than 10 years and not more than 30 years and also whipping, if convicted.

The court then set the case to be mentioned further in the Sessions Court on Nov 18.

While waiting for that date, the accused was released on bail of RM8,000 with two sureties.

He was also ordered to report to the case investigating officer on the first day of every month as additional bail.

The prosecution of the case was carried out by prosecuting officer ASP Siti Mariah Dahari while the accused was not represented.

Previously, the accused was remanded for nine days following the discovery of a baby boy in a fish storage container near a garbage dump around 8.30am in Jalan Tong Sang.
