KUCHING: Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) has urged that the 12th Sarawak election be suspended or postponed due to the recent surge in the Covid-19 cases.
Its president, Voon Lee Shan, pointed out in a statement that postponing the election was a wise move since the Covid-19 situation in Sarawak had not improved.
“We can’t take a risk because people’s lives are more important than elections. As things are, we don’t expect the situation to change very soon because new varieties continue to emerge and they are becoming more threatening.
“We urge all Sarawakians to band together in the fight against Covid-19, and we must take this battle seriously. The state government cannot accomplish anything without the assistance and cooperation of people,” he added.
Voon went on to say that the vaccination’s efficacy was unknown and that many people had tested positive for Covid-19 even after receiving the vaccines.
“With over 10,000 cases being reported every day, this is not something we can take lightly. We must all have in our minds that all people are Covid-19 positive unless proven otherwise.
“It is unfortunate that hospital staff are overworked and we do not have enough people, medicines, hospital beds or equipment to treat Covid-19 effectively.
“This situation is expected to worsen in the coming months as medical staff who are overworked resign,” he added.
The PBK president also reminded the public to always follow the standard operating procedures and to stay at home if there was no urgency to be out.
