KUCHING: The National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) is significant to increase public understanding on the importance of the media in delivering authentic and accurate information.
Kuching Division Journalists’ Association (KDJA) president Ronnie Teo Teck Wei described the organisation of HAWANA 2024 as one of the platforms to remind the media practitioners in carrying out their duties by prioritising the journalistic code of ethics.
He emphasised that media practitioners cannot ignore their code of ethics.
“The production of their reporting without ignoring this code of ethics is in line with the theme of the HAWANA 2024 celebrations which is ‘Ethics at the Core of Sustainable Journalism’.
“For us, journalism ethics are a very important cornerstone for media practitioners, especially in delivering information to the public in a transparent, authentic and accurate manner,” he said.
He said this when interviewed on the ‘Juh Randau’ Programme by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) at the UKAS Studio on Thursday (May 16).
Following this, Teo welcomes the public to participate in the exhibition during the HAWANA 2024 celebration which will be held from May 25 to 27 at the Main Atrium, Plaza Merdeka Shopping Centre Kuching.
According to him, there will be around 20 exhibition booths from 17 agencies including KDJA for visitors to look forward to.
“So, don’t miss this opportunity to experience the celebration with media practitioners from Sarawak and also from Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah along with those from Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam,” he added.
Meanwhile, KDJA deputy president Zulazhar Sheblee stated that the soon to be held HAWANA 2024 will be a platform to bring the media closer to the public and learn the duties of a journalist while in the field.
Touching on the role of the KDJA, he stated that the association plays an important role in looking after the welfare of journalists in Sarawak and provide training and activities to further strengthen the relationship between media practitioners.
