KUCHING: By working together with China-owned company Huawei, the state hopes to develop a digital payment system known as ‘Sarawak Pay’.
Also known as an ‘e-wallet’ system, it aims to enhance the development of financial technology in the state.
This was revealed by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg when attending the 68th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China celebration dinner at Imperial Hotel here yesterday.
“Nowadays in China, the people there pay using their smartphones instead of using physical cash,” he told guests at the dinner.
He also said that ‘Sarawak Pay’ will be linked to China and other neighbouring countries such as Thailand and Indonesia.
During his speech, the Chief Minister also praised China’s rapid development, saying that Sarawak should strive to be the same as them.
“Let us learn from China, let us embrace their philosophy and adjust it according to our needs.
“Working together with Huawei, we will see if they can assist us in moving to transform our economy to a digital economy,” he said.
Meanwhile, Consul-General of People’s Republic of China in Kuching Fu Jijun said in his speech that he is happy with the collaborations between both China and Malaysia.
“More and more new cooperative projects are coming up in the fields of infrastructure, manufacturing, trade, digital economy, culture, and education.
“I strongly believe that his (Johari) economics, which composed of visionary plans and innovative methods, for catching up the world trend and quickening up the economic and social transformation, will definitely drive Sarawak on its way to an more advanced State and bring a more bright future for Sarawak,” said Fu Jijun.
