KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is confident that Sarawak Energy will become the energy powerhouse in Southeast Asia (SEA).
He said Sarawak Energy has been entrusted with maintaining at least 60 per cent of renewable energy capacity mix and to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 600,000 tons per annum via the electrification of Sarawak’s mobility fleet by 2030.
“We expect that more than 15 per cent of Sarawak Energy’s income to come from foreign markets, and we want to position Sarawak as SEA’s renewable energy powerhouse.
“That is why we took the initiative to invest in Kalimantan through the Malinau project,” he said.
Abang Johari was officiating at the Sarawak Energy Vendor Awards 2023 (SEVA 2023) event at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) last night.
As the state is gearing towards green energy, he said this means the products produced and services delivered by the state would also be green and comply with the international financial requirements.
He also said Sarawak is focusing on developing four energy projects to generate power, namely hydrogen, gas, solar and a hybrid of solar and wind.
“Sarawak has the potential in the development of various renewable energies. I am very confident that Sarawak Energy can be the main player when it comes to generating power in this part of the region.
“This is because we have the resources, secondly we have the technology and most importantly we can adapt to the technology,” he said.
Abang Johari said various international banking institutions have expressed interest to invest in Sarawak because of this (resources and technology) and he is expected to meet with a delegation from Qatar soon.
