KUCHING: A 23-year-old graduate of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus (Swinburne Sarawak) donned traditional Melanau attire and keringkam headscarf in celebration of her cultural heritage.
Nur Asmah Zainuddin from Miri shared that instead of wearing formal attire, she decided to wear something significant on her graduation day.
“My father is Melanau and my mother is Malay, thus, I decided to wear traditional Melanau attire and keringkam headscarf.
“This is my identity and I am very proud of my roots.
“Besides, I hope it would also get more people to know and learn more about our traditional attire,” said Nur Asmah, who obtained her biotechnology degree.
She was among the 284 graduates at the Swinburne Sarawak graduation ceremony, held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching here on Tuesday (Oct 17). The ceremony was graced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Meanwhile, another graduate, Joanna Jerry, wore a beautiful ‘Ngepan’, a traditional costume for Iban women, the largest ethnic group in Sarawak.
The 23-year-old from Kuching also paired the traditional attire with Marek Empang (beaded collar) and sementing ringgit, a belt adorned with dangling coins.
“I have a deep interest in preserving the Iban culture; hence, I decided to wear the traditional costume today, especially when I am graduating from a university with many other international students.
“I think this is the best way to promote ‘Ngepan’ and its accessories, which we usually wear during festive occasions and special events,” she added.
