Swinburne team bags three prestigious awards

KUCHING: Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak (Swinburne) research team has won three big awards for their work on local tourism in Sarawak.

The awards include the Emerald-ICRTH 2023 Research Award from Emerald Publishing presented at the International Conference on Responsible Tourism and Hospitality in Bogor, Indonesia recently. The team was recognised for their study on local homestays in Sarawak.

“The team won the award for impactful research work on the future of sustainable tourism in Sarawak.

“Furthermore, the team also won the Best Paper Award at the same conference.

“Adding to their list of achievements, the team’s research was showcased at the poster presentation segment of the recent Innovation Technology Exposition 2023 (InTEX23) organised by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS).

“The team secured the Silver Award in the Research and Discovery – Social Sciences and Humanities category. These achievements reflect Swinburne’s dedication to enhancing tourism research and practices that empower local communities and promote sustainable tourism in Sarawak,” the university said in a statement today.

According to Dean of the Faculty of Business, Design and Arts Professor Brian Wong Kee Mun, research is more than just work. It should make a positive change.

“Here, we push our researchers to make a real difference for the future,” he said.

This research project was backed by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts as part of Sarawak’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030.

Led by Dr Bibiana Lim Chiu Yiong, the team also includes Dr Rodney Lim Thiam Hock, Dr Komathi Wasudawan, Dr Lim Tze Yin (Ivon), Dr Marc Arul Weissmann, Mr Irving Ting Shou Hui, and Dr Adam Long She from Sunway University, Malaysia.
