KUCHING: The Sarawak Women for Women Society (SWWS) has called for women to work together to achieve equal treatment and recognition in the workplace.
In stating this, the Sarawak Women For Women Society (SWWS) said that by working together, all women have a chance to reach their potential and be treated equally, free of discrimination.
“In Sarawak today, it is undeniable that women workers are still faced with discrimination and low pay.
“To address the issue first and foremost, all employers should ensure that the work environments are free from sexual harassment as mandated by the recent law while also ensuring that there is no discrimination in the workplace.
“In addition to that, employers should have a gender equality policy in the workplace regardless of what their work field is,” it said.
With the issue at hand, the non-government organisation (NGO) believed that more awareness programmes and education especially on gender equality should be made.
As such, it said that women’s groups and unions have been playing their role in raising awareness on rights of women workers in Sarawak.
“But for it to be effective, those who manage need to play their part and realise that Malaysia is a signatory to the UN Convention of the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and ensure they comply.
“The management needs to help the voices of women and union representatives to be heard in the workplace as it is a good way to create a respectful, collaborative work environment.
“That is why, we believe that more women should be at the table making the key decision to ensure that the contributions and challenges faced by women workers in Sarawak are adequately recognised,” it said.
