BAU: The gold mining town of Bau will celebrate the 200th anniversary of its gold mining industry by holding symposiums and exhibitions on its well-known history on Dec 31.
Tasik Biru assemblyman, Datuk Henry Harry Jinep revealed this during the launch of a ‘Trash to Cash Drive-through’ programme in conjunction with “Bau is Going Green 2020” programme by Bau District Council, at Tasik Biru on Sunday (Dec 13).
“The gold mining industry started in Bau since 1820 until today (2020) and we will take this opportunity to hold a symbolic celebration of its existence for two centuries.
“Among the proposed programmes are symposiums and inviting historians to give talks and insights on the gold mining history of Bau.
“The proposed location for this celebration is Grand Margherita Hotel on Dec 31. After we celebrate the 200th anniversary, we will then have the New Year countdown as well,” he said.
Henry explained that the proposed celebration was in line with the construction of the Bau Gold Mine Museum which was expected to commence next year.
The museum is one of the components under Bau District Blueprint 2016-2030.
“We, the Bau District Office and council under the Ministry of Local Government and Housing, have also submitted a letter to Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg about holding a countdown celebration and exhibitions for the ceremony.
“We also hope for his presence as well to officiate at the ceremony,” he continued.
Henry said besides the Bau District Office and council, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Sarawak Museum, Ministry of Local Government and Housing and also historical consultants would be involved.
