KUCHING: The Sarawak ping pong team faced a tough morning as they struggled against Penang in the group session.

In the women’s singles, Annie Siaw Mei Kong had a slow start, allowing her opponent, Amanda Hui Han Chuan, to take an early lead with scores of 11-4 and 11-7.

Siaw made a strong comeback in the next two sets, dominating 11-4 and edging out a 11-9 win to force the match into a decisive rubber set. However, Hui ultimately triumphed in the final set with an 11-6 score, sealing a 3-2 victory for Penang and securing their first point of the group stage.

The challenges continued for Sarawak as they were defeated in all four remaining categories.

The men’s doubles and singles saw Penang win decisively with 2-0 victories, while the women’s doubles and mixed doubles matches were closely contested but ended in Penang’s favour, both by 3-2.

The Sarawak team will have another opportunity to prove themselves in the next group category later today at SJK Chung Hua No. 3.
