KUCHING: A recycling centre will be established in Tabuan Melayu next year to enable proper waste management in the area.

Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said the recycling centre, which would be the first of its kind in Tabuan Melayu, would benefit the state government, Kuching South City Council (MBKS), and also the surrounding residents in Kampung Tabuan Hilir.

“I have proposed to the mayor to introduce a recycling centre just like in Cyberjaya, a big one where we can store waste and recycle it.

“I would build a recycling centre under my Rural Transformation Project (RTP) next year,” he said at a gotong-royong (mutual assistance) programme at Darul Hajat Mosque in Kampung Tabuan Hilir today (July 8).

He revealed that MBKS is also potentially planning to profit from recycling and waste materials, which could also provide energy and produce hydrogen.

Meanwhile, Dr Hazland also said residents in Tabuan Melayu will relocate to Muara Tabuan once the housing development project is completed, where a 300-acre land will be able to house 600 housing units under the Spectra Housing Scheme, which was approved by the then Chief Minister the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem in 2015.

“This area is 168 years old. It used to be known as Kampung Melayu and has expanded to nearly 1,384 houses with almost 15,000 residents.

“Therefore, this is a big challenge when everybody is packed in one place. This also serves as a challenge to increase proper waste management in the area,” he added.

Adding on, he said to ensure waste management is properly dealt with, the Kuching district council office has started a gotong-royong programme for MBKS, which will be conducted every two months, and the community leaders must report and update MBKS regarding its progress.

“It is a compulsory programme; the community leaders have to report to MBKS with photographs, and this would be a culture for the residents in all the villages throughout Kuching.

“This is a new initiative to ensure cleanliness is maintained in every village,” he said.

Among those present were MBKS mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng and MBKS deputy mayor Hilmy Othman.
