KUCHING: Sarawak’s taekwondo athletes kicked off the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2024 with a bang, securing three gold medals on the opening day of competition today (Aug 16).

The state’s dominance was evident in the recognised poomsae events.

The women’s trio of Farah Nabilla, Siti Yusriyyah, and Willemien Lai Lini clinched the first gold with a score of 7.70 points, edging out Johor and Penang.

The men’s trio, comprising Fedealis Kom, Mohd Issharil, and Randy Owen, followed suit with a gold medal of their own, scoring 8.02 points.

Randy Owen then added to Sarawak’s gold tally by winning the men’s individual poomsae event with a score of 7.80.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg presented the gold medals to the triumphant athletes, joined by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, and Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The taekwondo competition continues until August 20, with 20 more gold medals up for grabs.
