Efforts to maintain a ‘green bubble’ in Unimas continue

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) continues to keep tight control over the movement of students who are still on campus to ensure the students’ safety and welfare. Unimas deputy vice-chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof Dr Kamarudin Kana said that among the measures taken was ensuring that students adhere to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) such as social distancing, as well as prohibiting group activities and tightening the limits on students’ exit times.  He said the university had also held discussions with the owners of internal cafes to open their respective cares, including during weekends to make it easier for students to purchase cooked meals.  He explained that Unimas’ firm stance of not permitting students to return to their respective hometowns, especially during the festive season, was to curb the spread of Covid-19 which could put other students and campus residents at risk.  He said the matter had been conveyed earlier to the students in March, that is, when they were planning to return to Unimas to continue their studies.  Kamarudin said Unimas was concerned with the problems faced by students that cause them to have to remain on campus. Among them, he said, were the use of laboratories, the research needs of final year students, and the need for faster internet connections for online studies which are currently being implemented.

MMC, contractors do their bit to curb spread of coronavirus

MIRI: The Miri City Council (MCC) and its contractors for the Miri City Hall project will stop work during the movement control order (MCO) period to lessen the risk of Covid-19 transmissions.  The council said the decision was taken despite the fact that Miri City Hall is a government project and is exempted from the MCO restrictions, with conditions. “Miri City Hall is a signature project, but it can wait as public safety and health is the over-riding consideration,” said the council said in a statement today (June 2). They said the objective of the MCO, imposed in Sarawak from May 29 until June 11 and later extended to June 14, was to restrict movement of people and close contact in order to curb Covid-19 infections. They noted that the delayed release of the MCO standard operating procedures (SOPs) had resulted in considerable inconvenience and discontent among the public and other stakeholders. However, the council pointed out that the delay was due in part to the necessity of having to gazette the SOPs to give it the force of law for implementation. “It is of paramount importance that the public understand the objective of the MCO and therefore the absolute necessity to cooperate and comply with the SOPs to achieve the objectives of the MCO. “It is regrettable that some quarters have taken advantage of and exploited the sufferings and frustrations of the people under the unfortunate circumstances for their own selfish objectives,” said MCC. The council said any negative efforts to impede and frustrate the objectives of the MCO should be discouraged.
