KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has cleared the Sarawak Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud of the corruption and abuse of power allegations against him.
It said that the commission cannot take action against Taib although 15 investigations have been opened since 2015 or 2016.
At a press conference at Gerak Budaya here yesterday, MACC Chief Commissioner, Datuk Seri Shukri Abdull said Taib had not chaired any meeting or decided on a particular project. Taib, he added, did not preside over the meetings.
“There is not a single case linking to him. We have already handed the files to the Attorney-General’s Chambers, irrevocably, unless we receive new information.
“He did not make decisions on land or certain projects. The law does not allow us to take action against him,” the MACC chief said.
Taib was Sarawak Chief Minister from 1981 to 2014. On March 1, 2014, he was sworn in as Sarawak’s 7th Governor after resigning as Chief Minister on February 28, 2014. His service was extended for another four years in February this year.
