KUCHING: The rain accentuated the solemn tone at the funeral service for the late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, who was laid to rest at his final resting place in Demak Jaya.
He was buried beside his first wife, Allahyarhamah Puan Sri Datuk Patinggi Laila Taib, who died in 2009.
Earlier, his body was taken to Masjid Demak Baru for funeral prayers at approximately noon after the state funeral held in the morning at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) compound.
Following the Zohor prayer, the casket covered in the state flag was transported to the burial site by eight uniformed body pallbearers.
Family members and relatives, including Taib’s wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Raghad Kurdi Taib, were overtaken with grief as they said their final goodbyes to the former head of state.
Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg were also among those who attended the funeral to pay their last respects.
