KUCHING: Youth have been urged to take part in charity work to help the less fortunate.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said this when met by reporters after officiating at a Chinese New Year Alms Giving event at Lim Fah San Monastery yesterday.
“Here, we can see that a younger group is coming in to help the less fortunate. That is what we want to see.
“The succession plan must be there. I am sure there are more of the less unfortunate out there who need our help and care.”
Wee also praised the monastery for caring for the society, especially the less fortunate.
He added he had recently attended more than 10 charity events and was pleased that non-governmental organisations (NGOs) were coming together to contribute in one way or another.
“Let us stand united, care for each other and don’t take things for granted. Let this wonderful culture continue and share it with others who are of different races,” he said.
In the spirit of Chinese New Year, a total of 129 residents received charity aid yesterday at the monastery.
The recipients aged 70 years and above, received daily essentials such as rice and noodles.
