KUCHING: Everybody has been urged to pay serious attention to safety in their workplaces wherever they may be.
“No one should take safety-related things for granted,” said Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, yesterday.
He was visiting the families of two local persons, O Kui Lim, 49, and Tchee Kiam Jong, 24, who were killed in a gas explosion inside CityOne Megamall last Tuesday.
The wake for O Kui Lim was held at H’ng Nam Siang T’ng premises while the one for Tchee Kiam Jong was held at BDC housing estate.
Dr Sim said the public should not speculate about the tragedy at the mall as it would do more harm than good, so he would rather let the relevant authorities do their investigation.
Sadden by what has happened, he hoped that all those injured would recover quickly.
O Kui leaves behind six children with the two elder ones working and the youngest in Primary Six. He was in the furniture business.
As for Tchee, according to Dr Sim, he was from a poor family and worked as a plumber.
Also killed was Chin Hsien Loong, 29, from Butterworth, Penang. He was the manager of NeNe Chicken which was scheduled to open for business last Wednesday. Chin’s remains have been brought back to his home town for burial.
