KUCHING: Sarawak Heritage Society will organise a talk on ‘Red Bridge at Kampung Seropak’ at Telang Usan Hotel on Sunday (Oct 22) at 2 pm as part of its Heritage Speakers Series.
“There is such a spectacular heritage site — the steel suspension bridge at Kampung Seropak in Bau in the westernmost corner of Sarawak.
“Although known and used by the villagers, it was only in 2005 that the existence of this remote bridge became known. Before this, there were rumours of a red bridge in the area, but they were more considered fiction than fact.
“This story is about the finding of the bridge and uncovering its history, and a 20-year old journey that today enables us to tell the history of a 120-year old bridge,” Sarawak Heritage Society said in a press release.
The speaker for the talk is Ib Larsen, known for his research about Sarawak history in the Journal of the Malaysian Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, Malaysian Heritage Society’s Buletin Warisan and Atelier Society’s Atelier news.
“He has also given talks on the relation between the Hakka mining kongsi in Kalimantan, Indonesia and in Sarawak for the Indonesian Heritage Society and has worked in Malaysia for 13 years, seven years in Sarawak between 1999 to 2006,” Sarawak Heritage said.
Those interested can register at https://forms.gle/nRq6zZzaQdSzwxtf7 and admission for the talk is free. Additional information can be obtained from the Sarawak Heritage Society’s Facebook page or website www.sarawakheritagesociety.com.
