SERIAN: Youths in Tarat are encouraged to join the Voluntary Fire Brigade (PBS) as a team to act early in assisting the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba).

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit, Tarat assemblyman Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the involvement of youths as PBS members was important as a backbone for the team.

The Assistant Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development Minister expressed his satisfaction with the active involvement of Tarat’s local community in PBS.

“For example, PBS members will provide initial assistance in the event of fires, floods, and other emergencies prior to the arrival of the Bomba teams,” he said during a ceremony to hand over the PBS Kampung Simpok building and four-wheel drive vehicle on Monday (Feb 22).

The PBS Simpok building was constructed at a cost of RM60,000 under the Rural Transformation Programme, whereas the four-wheel drive vehicle was funded through Minor Rural Project at a cost of RM30,000.

PBS Simpok chairperson Alice Luna Bala said thus far, there were 43 PBS members comprising residents of Kampung Simpok, Kampung Sarig, and Kampung Pesa.

The objective of establishing PBS is to provide advisory services to the local community on fire hazards and fire prevention measures.

PBS strengthens coordination with Bomba and other agencies related to fire safety. It also assists Bomba in taking care of fire hydrants in their respective areas.
