BINTULU: A teacher here was cheated of about RM142,000 in a Macau scam.

Police released a statement today that a 25-year-old female teacher lodged a report yesterday after realising that some of her money had gone missing.

Bintulu OCPD Supt Batholomew Umpit said the victim received a call from an unknown man on June 15, saying that she had an unsettled debt with a company.

“The unknown man identified himself as a tax staff. The victim was asked to pay RM59,000 as her name was registered to the said company.

“The suspect then purportedly connected the victim to what he said was Melaka police so that she could make a report.

“The suspect, now identifying himself as a police officer, said the victim was involved in drug trafficking and money laundering activities, receiving RM228,000 in commission.”

The victim was also told by the suspect to contact a senior police officer with a ‘Dato’ title, elaborated Supt Batholomew.

“After that, she received a text from a number 017-8725140 via WhatsApp asking her to make a personal loan of RM200,000.

“She was told to do this to prove that there were no illegal funds going into her savings account.”

Supt Batholomew said, according to the victim, she made the loan and opened up an account at a bank on June 23, and downloaded a bank app from a link provided by the suspect.

She then filled in her personal information, password, ATM card number, CVV number, and identity card number, including a security phrase, in the app.

“She only realised she had been conned after she was told by her husband that this was a scam.

“After checking the balance of her account online, at least RM142,000 had been transferred to two unknown individuals through six transactions between June 27 and 28,” said Supt Batholomew.
