KUALA LUMPUR: National Union of Teaching Profession (NUTP) president Aminuddin Awang claimed there were teachers ‘coerced’ to become full-time school wardens by the principals.

He said not only would this increase the burden of a teacher’s job; the additional scope of work would also make the responsibility of an educator less efficient.

“I believe no teachers would volunteer to become warden. They are ‘forced’ to become warden, only some schools have applied the rotation system since many teachers refuse to become warden.

“Based on this situation, I urge the government to employ warden not among the teachers. We had previously proposed for the creation of a full-time warden, but the proposal was rejected by the Education Ministry,” he said when contacted by Bernama here today.

Aminuddin said when it comes to boarding school, the warden plays an important role because the teacher has tasks that need to be done throughout the day and into the night and still work on the weekends.

“In this regard to ensure that they are able to perform their duties more effectively, we strongly expect a special study be carried out by the Ministry of Education to address this problem,” he said.

Meanwhile, The Parent Action Group for Education (PAGE) chairperson Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim said bullying was still rampant in schools, especially in boarding schools.

She said, it is clear that school administrators are still unable to control it and full boarding schools are encouraged to review their respective standard operating procedures (SOPs) to prevent bullying among students.

“Bullying cases need to be taken seriously, it is not trivial and can be embarrassing for the school. This should not be tolerated or taken lightly,” she said. – Bernama
