SARATOK: The condition of the quarters that teachers reside in at schools should be seen as a priority, along with the upgrading of school buildings.
Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri said, by looking at the school buildings, one would immediately notice they are in decrepit conditions. Therefore these many dilapidated schools certainly deserve the government’s serious attention.
“In my area, for example, primary schools such as SK Sungai Antu, SK Sungai Entebu, SK Sungai Nyiar, SK Lubok Nibong and SK Paloh really need immediate attention and repairs.
“There are also some that have been upgraded such as SK Kaba, SK Perpat and SK Kampung Kupang but they still have inadequate and poor conditions of teachers’ residences.
“Therefore, I would like to draw the attention of the federal government in particular to focus on upgrading the quarters in parallel with school development,” he said when met after inspecting the condition of SK Sungai Entebu’s dilapidated classrooms.
He hoped that the 2023 Budget that was presented recently could also reach schools in Kalaka area.
“When I see the dilapidated state of the schools, I feel sad.
“Sometimes we feel that we have risked the lives of school children…it is clear that the wood (building structures) are rotting more and more.
“That’s why last year and next year, the allocation I received from the Sarawak government, especially under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), I used and will use to help schools,” he said.
However, it had to be arranged in stages due to many schools in Kalaka area that are still hoping to be improved.
When he met SK Sungai Entebu led by headmaster Asagap Ali Hassan and chairman of the Parents and Teachers’ Association (PIBG) David Lakon, he expressed his commitment to fulfil the school’s request.
