KUCHING: The safety of students is mandatory while the main priority for teachers is to teach, said Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) president Macky Joseph.

“Sufficient allocations of time for face-to-face teaching should not be taken away from the teachers,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He made the comments after Education Senior Minister Dr Radzi Jidin announced that schools nationwide were set to welcome all students, primary and secondary, in phases, starting July 15.

Macky added that the schools were also expected to be safe with strict adherence to the relevant standard operating procedures (SOPs) by all its members within the school compound as well as outside.

He also said that students who felt unwell should just stay at home and get proper medication.

“Parents and guardians need to thoroughly check that their children are safe before going to school,” he added.

Macky also urged relevant parties to abide to the SOPs set in combating the spread of Covid-19.
