KUCHING: With the announcement of the reopening of schools for face-to-face sessions for certain classes, the Sarawak Teachers’ Union has expressed confidence that schools would be able to ensure that the Covid-19 standard operating procedure (SOP) can be adhered to with the cooperation of parents and the students themselves.

STU president Adam Prakash Abdullah said this was since only Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), Sijil Vokasional Malaysia (SVM), Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM), Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM), Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia (STAM), and Diploma Vokasional Malaysia (DVM) 2020 and 2021 batches would be returning to schools.

“STU would like to thank the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) and the State Education Department (JPNS) for their timely decision in announcing the school reopening,” he said in a statement today.

He also thanked all teachers teaching in Sarawak, especially STU members, for their efforts in preparing for the reopening of schools, especially when some schools were affected by floods.

“It is indeed our responsibility to educate our children, be it in physical classes or remote teaching, especially in this critical time.

“It is important for the children to feel our presence as teachers even on virtual platforms. For teachers who have to hand over learning materials to their students, please be vigilant at all times. Wear your mask and keep your physical distance,” he said.

Adam also called on parents to assist in communicating with their children’s teachers so that their children’s education can continue despite the pandemic.

“No matter what, education must go on – it just takes a different form during the pandemic,” he said.

During SDMC’s Covid-19 press conference earlier on Saturday, its chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas announced that for schools in movement control order (MCO) and conditional movement control order (CMCO) areas in the state, face-to-face schooling sessions would only involve students sitting for SPM, SVM, SKM, STPM, STAM, and DVM examinations for 2020 and 2021.
