OYA: Teachers have been urged to use their creativity to produce positive results in their students and their performances. In making the call, Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development, Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, pointed that such approach by some teachers had caused the performances of some schools to be better than those of other schools.
The Minister pointed out that creativity would add value to their teaching ability and approach. She was speaking at the SMK Oya Student Excellence Award 2018 Ceremony held at the open hall of the school here yesterday morning. Fatimah also lauded the school for its “Reaching Out” Programme.
Under the programme, the teachers visit students at home if they do not turn up for classes. “I hope this noble effort will continue because of the importance of education,” she added.
Fatimah believed that the community in Dalat District would continue to pay special attention to the education of their children. “For instance, last Saturday, I was surprised to see the very good response from the locals towards Karnival Perpustakaan MDDM 2018 at Stadium Perpaduan, Dalat.
“To me, this was a manifestation of the parents’ awareness of the importance of their children’s education,” added Fatimah. She revealed that the state government would continue to enrich the child early learning programme, especially for those aged three years and above.
The Minister also touched on the monetary initiative from the state government for babies born in 2019. “The quantum or amount of the assistance is yet to be known and announced. One thing’s for sure. It is for the benefit of the people, especially the future of the recipients.
“It can only be withdrawn when they are 18 years old. It applies to newborn babies next year, regardless of their social, racial and religious backgrounds as long as they are Sarawakians or Anak Sarawak,” she said.
That assistance, Fatimah added, could be used as the fee or cost for furthering their studies. For those who decided to be involved in business by then, the monetary initiative can be used as the start-up capital. On the event (graduation day) Fatimah, who is also Dalat State Assemblywoman, pointed that it was a very special occasion or climax of their secondary school years, especially for the Form Five and Form Six students.
Among those present at the function were SMK Oya Principal, Malihah Sirat, SAO Zarina Said of Oya Sub-District Office, Mohd Haslam Quraisya Abdullah, who represented Dalat District Education Officer, SMK Oya Parent-Teachers Association Chairman, Cr. Aini Suhaili, Temenggong Hendi Suhai, heads of departments and local community leaders.
