KUCHING: As schools nationwide come back to life with the commencement of school session for the year, most teachers are concerned about the level of performance of their students.
Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) president Adam Prakash Abdullah has high hope that the Ministry of Education (MOE) will provide suggestion on alternative assessment for the students.
This concerns especially those who do not get accessibility to their teachers or learning materials.
It also pertains to the fact that students have not been physical present in schools for quite a while, he pointed out.
“Teachers have been ready for the school session even as early as January because under normal circumstances, the school session would have started. While there are teachers who are still unable to return to their station especially from West Malaysia, this doesn’t totally obstruct lessons as they are also prepared to conduct classes online.
“It cannot be denied that teachers all over the country are worried for their students’ performance in school and the same goes for us in Sarawak. However, I believe that teachers have prepared well for this situation and to make the new school session something the students look forward to,” he said.
He stated that teachers would have to be creative and innovative in conducting their lessons during this difficult time.
“The online teaching and learning have become a new norm in our schooling system. I believe parents have given their support and done a great job by making sure their children continue to learn at home while waiting for school to open.
“Teachers would definitely need to have a lot of motivations and enthusiasm as well as attractive teaching and learning activities to overcome the challenges. Everyone should work together and help make this school session bearable for the students,” he added.
The school session in districts declared as red zones namely Kuching, Samarahan, Julau, Meradong, Sibu, Kapit, Bintulu, Sibis and Miri was postponed for another two weeks from March 1 to 14 as was recently announced by Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).
