SIBU: Team Electrocak brought home RM5,000 as they emerged as champions of the Sibu IC Design Make-A-Thon 2024, on Sunday (Oct 27).

The team, featuring Tiong Wei Jie and Ki Hui Yee from the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS), along with Tiffany Jun Mckenzie and Nur Aleesya Dayana Mohamad Salim from SMK Kampung Nangka, will compete in the Grand Finale in Kuching on Nov 3.

The first runners-up, Team LP, included Risu Manuel Frankie Deria and Maiwarda Safidi from UTS, as well as Ho Nyet Wei and Fong Yu Chen from SMK Deshon. They received RM3,000, medals, and certificates.

The Dragon Warriors team, featuring Vincent Tiong Yong Han from UTS, Reiko Wong Ke Shin, and Gabriella Vanessa Usu Sylvester Jigom from SMK Rosli Dhoby, secured third place, receiving RM1,000, medals, and certificates.

The ‘People’s Choice Award’ went to the Alligator of Innovation team, represented by Tiong Jiing Bin and Chiu Siew Chin from UTS, along with Elyiana Ummie Deris and Willexsly Willismo from SMK Durin. Each team member received a certificate.

The prize presentation ceremony was officiated by Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.

Held over three days from Oct 25-27, the programme gathered 40 students in 10 teams from UTS and 10 local high schools.

Organised by SMD (Sarawak Microelectronic Designs) Semiconductor, with support from the Sarawak Ministry of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development (MEITD), the Sarawak Research Development Council (SRDC), Chumbaka, and UTS, the event aimed to promote the semiconductor industry, especially in IC design, while advancing STEM education in schools and universities.

The competition included hands-on workshops and mentorship sessions from industry and academic experts, providing participants with valuable insights and guidance.
