Teenage pregnancy in Kapit shows yearly decline, says Jamit

KAPIT: Bukit Goram State Assemblyman, Jefferson Jamit Unyat expressed his pleasure that the rate of teenage pregnancy in Kapit has steadily declined over the years. He attributed the lower rate because of the concerted efforts of One Stop Teenage Pregnancy Committee (OSTPC) Kapit.

“I am pleased that the rate of teenage pregnancy in Kapit has steadily declined over the years. OSTPC must be commended for its concerted effort to educate the public. It is very important to provide input on this social issue so that teenage, parent and the community aware of this issue, what is teenage pregnancy and the issues arising from it”, said Jamit while launching the closing ceremony of the one-day ‘Road Show One Stop Teenage Pregnancy Committee and Social Laws 2018’ (Jerayawara OSTPC Dan Undang-Undang Sosial Tahun 2018) held at the State Office Complex at Jalan Bleteh on Thursday afternoon.

“Through this road show, we can understand the role and function of OSTPC that is to explain , to identify and disseminate vital information concerning teenage pregnancy. OSTPC comprises of various government departments and agencies and I called upon the stake holders to continue the good job to further reduce the rate of teenage pregnancy through social media, education and religious approach”, added Jamit.

OSTPC comprising of the various government departments and agencies serving as one stop support for the pregnant teenage from as young as ten years old to nineteen years old.

Statistics from the Ministry of Health Malaysia reveals that the teenage pregnancy for the state of Sarawak for the year 2012 to 2017 are as follows 2012 some 3866 cases, 2013 (4078 cases), 2014 (3401 cases), 2015 (2909 cases), 2016 ( 2481 cases) and last year 2017 has record of some 2130 cases. Looking at the statistics, it is declining.

Present together at the function were Kapit Resident, Joseph Belayong Punan, administrative officer in charge of social , Belayong Pok, administrative officer of Kapit District Office, Bidah Lujah, Dr Mohd Nazirul Shareef from Sarawak Health Department, Gekie Utak from Majlis Adat Istiadat Sarawak, Khibtiah Sallah from Sarawak National Registration Department, Kumbong Garit from Kapit Education Department, Umadi Polot from Cawangan Perlindungan Kanak-Kanak Jabatan Kebajikan Sarawak, DSP Jennifer Atok from Sarawak Police Contingent, Peter Gabong from the Welfare Department Kapit, Temenggong Wilfred Billy Panyau, Pemanca Haji Wasli Nor, Pemanca Yong Thu Fook and two hundred guests and participants.
