KUCHING: Police here arrested a young lad and seized over RM80,000 worth of contraband cigarettes and beer in Demak Laut yesterday.
Kuching OCPD ACP Ahsmon Bajah said the district’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID) D9 branch managed to find 55,000 various cigarette sticks and 2,058 litres of various beers in a premises.
All of the goods believed to be uncustomed, are estimated to be worth around RM84,372.72
He added that a 19-year-old local who was arrested in the 3.30pm raid, would be remanded to facilitate investigations under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
If convicted, the suspect is liable to a fine up to 20 times the value of seizure or up to RM500,000, whichever is higher, or sentenced to jail to a term up to five years, or both.
Ahsmon assured that the police will continue to conduct similar operations to combat smuggling activities as they are causing losses to the economy in terms of tax.
