KUCHING: Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak (TEGAS) has played a huge role in raising awareness and developing talents among Sarawak youngsters, especially in the field of digital technology and Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology (STEM) education.
Demak Laut assemblyman Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said it will help achieve the vision and mission of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on the digital economy agenda.
“Therefore, to ensure concomitant development and closing the gap of digital literacy between urban and rural communities, TEGAS is always looking for the best way to ensure programmes in rural areas are implemented.
“One of the programmes that have been implemented in rural areas is Community Innovation Literacy (COMIL) which has been held in Kampung Rajang Tanjung Manis, Uma Belor Sungai Asap, Long Bedian Baram, Long Latei Baram, Kampung Bakam Bekenu, Kampung Penan Muslim Bintulu and many more,” he said at the TEGAS 10th Anniversary roadshow at Penview Convention Centre, Demak today.
He said a TEGAS Future Tech Showcase is also coming up soon which will see it bringing this programme to longhouses and villages so that those who live in rural areas will know of future technologies.
“It will help them gain knowledge about the latest technologies that are being used, especially technology in agriculture, livestock, fisheries and so on.
“I am confident that the programmes that have been planned and support from strategic partners will benefit all communities in Sarawak, especially the people in the Demak Laut area.
“By arming them with digital innovation skills as well as the technical skills that will be imparted by TEGAS to the youths of Demak Laut, I believe the future for our area in developing our economy is brighter,” he remarked.
He believes it will have a positive impact on key industries in the Demak Laut area such as tourism and fisheries.
