TELANG Usan assemblyman Datuk Dennis Ngau has proposed the establishment of a dedicated unit under the Premier’s Department to coordinate Sarawak’s rural development efforts effectively.
He said with the substantial allocation for rural development in the state budget, a specialised department could help coordinate and implement projects to supplement current ministry initiatives in rural areas.
“As a representative of a highly rural constituency, I believe this setup would ensure that development programmes are well-coordinated, delivered on time, and aligned with approved plans,” he said during his debate in support of the Supply Bill 2025, today (Nov 15).
He also urged for a government service centre to be established at Long San sub-district to better serve the local rural community.
“After years of meetings led by the Telang Usan District Office, with strong backing from community leaders, we have proposed relocating the Long Lama sub-district office to Long San.
“This is because the Long Lama sub-district has now been upgraded to a full district office,” he added, stressing the need to expedite this relocation to improve government service delivery.
In addressing education for rural students, Dennis voiced concerns regarding their ability to meet entry requirements for state international schools, particularly in STEM subjects.
He suggested enhancing science labs in local schools like SMK Long Lama, SMK Datuk Temenggong Lawai Jau in Long San, and SMK Long Bedian to better equip students in these areas.
“The state Education Ministry should consider complementing the Ministry of Education’s efforts by providing these secondary schools with the necessary STEM resources.”
