LONG IKANG (BARAM): Volunteers intending to carry out community-based projects are welcomed in Telang Usan, said its assemblyman Dennis Ngau.

With an area as wide as Telang Usan, sparsely populated and located deep in the state’s interior, it would need everyone’s effort to meet the needs of its inhabitants.

Since the formation of Malaysia, Telang Usan has always been part of the previous government’s rural development agendas.

“Of course we acknowledge what have been brought and implemented here but more are needed to be done,” said Dennis, stressing that due to its size, efforts must be continued.

“Even if there is a change of government at the federal level, I hope all the efforts will be continued to ensure the lives of rural folk are taken care of.

“That is why I am happy to welcome the team from MYCORP to come to my constituency and carry out their voluntary work for the longhouse folk,” he added.

According to Dennis, the size or amount of effort did not matter as all kinds of assistance were needed to uplift the living standards of rural folk.

Dennis made the remarks in his speech to welcome the team of top officers from the Department of Youth and Sports Malaysia headed by its director-general Datuk Hatipah Ibrahim to officiate three community-based projects carried out by the MYCORP team at Long Ikang, Baram recently.

Among those present were Hartini A Jabbar (Rakan Muda Development Unit director), Mohd Nizam Ismail (Youth and Sports Department Sarawak director), T Nageshwary (Department of Youth and Sports Malaysia deputy director), Lamat Nyalau (Miri Institute Kemahiran Belia Negara director), Penghulu Theodorus Lenjau Kuleh (Baram Hilir community leader) and TK Catherine Madang (Head of Long Ikang women).

The event was also attended by the folk of Long Ikang, Long Banyok and Logan Sibong.

Dennis further revealed that he had received enquiries from local folk on the purpose and presence of the young volunteers for six weeks at the longhouses in Telang Usan and some were skeptical and very uneasy, but after explaining the team background and the purpose of their presence, the locals were more receptive.

The MYCORP team who spent six weeks at Long Ikang undertook three community-based projects, namely Water Filtration System, Knowledge on making Banana Nuggets and teaching on Cultured  Mushroom for four longhouses within the Lower Baram region. The team started their community work at Long Ikang since early December 2018.

Hatipah in her speech thanked Dennis for his support to the teams of volunteers who undertook the community-based projects in Telang Usan. She said she was told by her officers and teams of volunteers that they received the best and strongest support from Dennis.
