MUKAH: When you visit the Mukah wet market in Pekan Lama (Old Market) everyday between 9am to noon, you will surely come across a traditional Melanau food called Teliseh.

Teliseh is made of various types of sea or river fish cooked in curry and mixed with crunchy sago grains.

It can also be prepared by cooking chicken or meat (cow, deer, buffalo and others) curry.

“I always prepare curry dishes and prepare Teliseh to be served and eaten together at a place on the banks of the Mukah Wet Market.

“Anyone who comes to visit the market is of course invited to eat together the Teliseh that I prepared.

“Sometimes there are also visitors who buy fish and several packs of sago grains, then ask me to cook curry to make Teliseh to eat,” according to a fish seller at the Mukah Wet Market known as Lee Kuhi.

“Teliseh is synonymous with the arrival of the monsoon season. I believe it should be promoted, especially when the fishing season begins.”

Lee Kuhi added: “Eating Teliseh together can also promote the traditional food of the Melanau, strengthen ties between people.”

The fishing season has arrived again in Mukah, which is usually like before, when the month of ‘Pengejin’ (March to April) arrives or the Kaul Mukah season arrives.

Traditionally, when Kaul Mukah arrives, it must be the fruit season and bounties from the sea.
