MIRI: In a show of community care and support, the Hua Kwong Buddhist Temple here distributed 2,436 packages of rice, each weighing 10 kilogrammes, to local residents in need on Sunday morning.

The distribution event, now in its second year, aimed to provide essential aid to struggling families and individuals here.

The event was attended by key community leaders, including Minister of Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, who officiated at the distribution, as well as Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, and Miri Mayor Adam Yii.

Crowds began gathering at the temple as early as 7 am, eager to participate in this act of collective support.

Temple chairman Lee En Ping, alongside committee members and a dedicated group of volunteers, organised the event, made possible by the generous contributions from various donors in the city.

The event ran smoothly this year, reflecting improvements since last year’s inaugural mass distribution.

The rice distribution initiative was originally launched during the COVID-19 pandemic with a door-to-door delivery model. Since then, it has grown into an annual community gathering, expanding its reach and impact.

Meanwhile, Lee expressed his gratitude to the volunteers and donors, noting that the initiative is a testament to the community’s spirit of unity and compassion.
“This is a meaningful way to show love and care for our neighbours who are facing difficulties,” he said.

The temple plans to continue the tradition, strengthening community bonds and providing vital assistance to those in need.
