KUCHING: The Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) yesterday donated RM100,000 to Fuk Teck Kong Temple at Jalan Semeba here.
Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang presented the donation to committee members of the 123 year-old temple to build a hall and repair outdated facilities at the temple.
“The devotees have raised money to purchase land adjacent to the temple to construct basic amenities such as prayer hall,” Lo said after officiating at an earth breaking ceremony and presentation of Unifor grant at the site yesterday.
Lo said he is proud that Sarawak is the only state in the country to have Unifor.
“This shows that the State government is committed to protecting its multi-racial and multi-religious people by providing funds to other religions besides Islam to build or repair their places of worship.
“Lately, we have read about or heard of racial and religious disputes in Malaya but such issue does not exist in Sarawak as the people here are like a family and even practise mixed marriages,” he added.
In fact, leaders in Malaya often raise racial and religious issues to gain popularity. Such leaders are not needed here and should be kicked out of Sabah and Sarawak.
The Batu Kitang assemblyman also called on the people of Sarawak to continue to support the GPS government in the coming state election to reclaim the rights of Sarawak which have been eroded for decades.
“No other party can unite the people of this state apart from GPS. Only GPS can determine Sarawak’s future,” he pointed out.
