KUCHING: The Kuching Teochew Association will host a series of events this year to commemorate its 160th anniversary.
The commemoration is themed “Gratitude at 160 Years: A Celebration of Teochew Heritage and Enduring Legacy.”
Organising chairman Tan Kay Hock, said celebration will include events, a Teochew Cultural Night Banquet on June 15 and a 160th Anniversary Celebration Banquet on June 16.
It will also involve a youth cultural camp, a talk by scholar Lin Lun Lun, a special historical exhibition, and an inaugural “Teochew Expo” with over 30 booths to promote local and overseas businesses and expand international business opportunities.
Businesses and organisations interested in participating in the expo should register as soon as possible. Registration closes on June 1.
The Teochew Cultural Night Banquet meanwhile will include performances from the Singapore Nanyang Teochew Opera Troupe and the Kuching Teochew Association, while the 160th Anniversary Celebration Banquet will honour the Teochew community’s past, present, and future.
The organising committee has invited around 500 Teochew associations and organisations from West Malaysia, China, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, and the Philippines to attend the Kuching celebration.
The Kuching Teochew Association will host the Teochew Youth, and Teochew Women’s Association meetings on June 16, coinciding with the annual Sarawak Teochew Associations (STA) convention here.
Over 200 delegates from eight STA branches, including Sri Aman, Engkilili, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, Dalat, Miri, and Kuching, will attend this annual event.
From July to December, there will be a variety of events, including the Teochew Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition, the Kuching Festival Teochew Food Exhibition, the Hungry Ghost Festival Prayers, the Mid-Autumn Festival Celebrations, the Respect for the Elderly Dinner, and the 160th Anniversary Commemorative Special Issue.
